Finding Fitness
Last year I ran two half-marathons.
Two!
13.1 miles each.
Boom goes the dynamite.
Drop the mic.
(totally lame, totally proud).
However, I've taken a hiatus from running since my last race - 5 miler Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day. It's been cold, and I've been busy. Really busy. I used to go to the gym during lunch every day but I haven't even been motivated to do that. My friend Laura and I signed up for a 10K March 30 back in January, we thought that would get us moving. Only neither one of us has started training yet. Granted there's been the polar vortex, more snow than I've seen in years, more polar vortex, more snow. Oh, and that thing called work. It's a vicious cycle of work, school work, work, school work, staying warm, work, school, and so forth. Anyway, I've got to get my butt running again.
That sad story was actually not where I was going when I thought up this post. I am so easily sidetracked/distracted/oooo shiny object!
DASSAH is the one who needs to get her butt moving. She has been one sad sack of lazy-bones since really school started up. And when I'm done with school in 7 weeks, you betchya I'm going to be taking off with riding like nobody's business. But it's not quite fair to her to let her go another 7 weeks and then expect her to jump right in with as much enthusiasm and energy as I want her to have. Thankfully, Horse & Hound had an article that got my fitness juices pumping. Formulating a fitness plan for your horse came along via... Horse Nation or Eventing Nation or Horse Junkies United, or SOME blog I read. So sorry I cannot give credit where it's due. Anyway, by combining that with Jimmy Wofford's article here, I think I have a pretty good plan for getting Dassah into great shape. Now I do have all those books I bought so I will incorporate lessons from there into my plan, but at least I have a starting place/box.
This is good - the winter weather has been bringing me down in the dumps about riding. I've been losing my mojo and now that I have a plan for Dassah, I can feel it coming back a bit. I think. At least now I have a plan that is spelled out for me. I really appreciate having a plan, having something to go on, some place to start.

Winter weather is so hard. Congrats on the 13.1s!! I'm tentatively hoping to do my first one this year.
ReplyDeleteOh yay!! That will be so much fun! I didn't think I'd enjoy it at all but I love running those races - the people are all encouraging and the time flies by. You will be so proud of yourself!
DeleteI like to run, but I'm not much of a competitive runner, hoping for sunshine so you guys can get back at it!
ReplyDeleteI honestly did not want to race until the opportunity practically fell into my lap. Having done the half-marathons and a couple of 5ks since, I have to say races are crazily growing on me. I like the adrenaline rush of running with a bunch of people and all the spectators cheering on. Hope you are getting great weather and are able to get some feel-great runs in!
DeleteThanks for sharing the fitness plan for the horses! If I could change my discipline it too, would be eventing. I hope we can both work that out!
ReplyDeleteMy pleasure! I checked out your blog - very cool. I have never heard of competitive trail riding but it looks awesome!
